What we dig

Machine work on residential sites, priced by the hour or as a flat job depending on what suits you.

  • Lawn and sod stripping ahead of turf, rock or pavers
  • Grading and levelling, including raising low spots and fixing slope away from the house
  • Pool excavation and prep for the pool installer to take over
  • Footing, shed pad and foundation digs
  • Trenching for drainage, irrigation, gas, water and electrical
  • Drain rock, French drains and getting water off the property properly
  • Stump and root removal, old concrete and wall demolition
  • Spoil loaded and hauled off site, or reused on site where it makes sense
  • Post holes and gravel driveway builds

Tight access is not a problem

A lot of yards around Willoughby, Clayton and the townhouse complexes have a four foot gate and no other way in. We size the machine to the gate rather than telling you to take your fence down.

If the only way to move material is by hand and wheelbarrow, we'll say so in the quote and price it honestly instead of finding out on day two.

How excavation gets priced

Machine work is billed at an hourly rate with the machine and operator included, which is the fairest way when nobody knows exactly what's under the ground yet.

When the scope is clear and measurable, like stripping a front lawn to a set depth, we'll give you a flat price for the whole thing instead. Either way you get one number, in writing, before we start.

Why the dig is the job

Everything that goes on top of a yard is only as good as what's underneath it. Get the dig wrong and you're looking at the problem for the next ten years.

Grade

What we’re best at

Anyone can dig a hole. Getting a yard dead flat, or sloped to exactly where you want the water going, is the part that takes hours in the seat. We run a rotary laser and a grade rod and check it as we go instead of eyeballing it off the fence.

Water

Sloped away from the house

Out here it rains. Every grade we cut is set to move water off the property, not toward your foundation or over the neighbour's line.

Base

Compacted, not just dumped

We own our compactor and we use it in lifts. A base that isn't compacted properly settles, and then the stone on top of it moves.

Machines

Sized to your access

From a mini that fits a three foot gate up to full size machines. Three and four foot gates are normal around here, so we size the machine to your access instead of asking you to pull the fence apart.

Digging for other trades

We do machine time for builders, landscapers, pool installers and fence crews who'd rather not own a machine or chase a rental.

  • Machine and operator by the hour, or the dig priced as a flat job
  • Footings, pads, strip outs and rough grade ahead of your crew
  • Pool digs prepped and handed over to the installer
  • Trenches for fencing, irrigation and services
  • Spoil hauled off or stockpiled on site, your call
  • We show up when we said we would, because your schedule is stacked behind us

Questions we get asked

How small a gate can you get through?

Three feet is doable with the right machine, and four feet opens up plenty of options. Measure the narrowest point, including the swing of the gate, and send us that number with your photos.

Do you charge hourly or a flat price?

Excavation on its own is usually hourly with the machine and operator included, because nobody knows exactly what's under the ground yet. When the scope is measurable, like stripping a lawn to a set depth, we'll give you a flat number for the whole thing.

Where does the dirt go?

Off site to the right place, and that's in the price we give you. If some of it is worth keeping to backfill or build up a low spot, we'll say so rather than hauling it away and selling you soil later.

Do I need to be home?

Not once we've walked the site together and agreed the scope. Lots of digs can happen while you're at work. We'll send photos at the end of the day.

What about utilities?

Anything that involves digging near services gets located before a bucket goes in the ground. That's not an upsell, it's just how it has to be done.

Can you finish the yard after, or only dig it?

Either. A lot of people have us dig and grade and then take it from there themselves. Plenty of others have us carry straight on into the wall, the pavers or the turf so it's one crew and one number.

Need something dug?

Send a couple of photos, the rough size of the area and how wide your access is. That gets you a ballpark the same day. We come out and walk the site before the final number either way.

Takes 20 seconds. No spam, no obligation.
